The reading of the demotic group for the word “left” is taken up anew. After mustering the different attestations and establishing the existence of three basic types of character forms, considerations from the diachronic development of the Egyptian language as well as palaeography are brought up. It is proposed to read the group for “left” as smḥ, and for at least two of the basic types, models in New Kingdom hieratic orthography can be pointed out.
